Cosmic Physics: the High Energy Frontier
نویسنده
چکیده
Cosmic rays have been observed up to energies 10 times larger than those of the best particle accelerators. Studies of astrophysical particles (hadrons, neutrinos and photons) at their highest observed energies have implications for fundamental physics as well as astrophysics. Thus, the cosmic high energy frontier is the nexus to new particle physics. This overview discusses recent advances being made in the physics and astrophysics of cosmic rays and cosmic γ-rays at the highest observed energies as well as the related physics and astrophysics of very high energy cosmic neutrinos. These topics touch on questions of grand unification, violations of Lorentz invariance as well as Planck scale physics and quantum gravity.

44 Lattice Field Theory : Scientific Goals and Computing Needs
One of the foremost goals of high-energy physics is to test the Standard Model of particle physics and to search for indications of new physics beyond. Towards this aim, the experimental high-energy physics program is pursuing three complementary approaches: experiments at the “energy frontier” try to directly produce non-Standard Model particles in collisions at large center-of-mass energies; ...
متن کاملA study on the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in extensive air showers
The dependence of the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in simulated extensive air showers to the energy and the mass of the primary cosmic rays has been studied. It has been shown that a previous claim about mass independent proportionality of shower energy to the total Cherenkov photon number is not valid in energies below EEAS ~ 1014 eV. We have found that the core distance of the so c...
متن کاملDetecting Cosmic Rays of the Highest Energies
The highest energies are defined, at a given time, by our detector capabilities. Thus the highest energies will be the just measured or soon to be measured energies. To-day, the frontier in cosmic rays reaches 10 eV. This represents a macroscopic energy, namely 16 J, transported by a microscopic object. For charged particles, the highest energy events seem to necessitate some New Physics, beyon...

I discuss recent advances being made in the physics and astrophysics of cosmic rays and cosmic γ-rays at the highest observed energies as well as the related physics and astrophysics of very high energy cosmic neutrinos. I also discuss the connections between these topics.
